SK Hynix invests $8 billion to purchase ASML EUV lithography machines

3/26/2026 1:43:52 AM

According to media reports such as Yonhap News Agency and Reuters, storage giant SK Hynix is introducing EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography equipment to accelerate capacity expansion and transition to advanced processes.

According to reports, SK Hynix announced on March 24th the introduction of EUV lithography equipment from Dutch equipment manufacturer ASML.

The total amount of this procurement is approximately 11.9496 trillion Korean won (approximately 7.97 billion US dollars), accounting for 9.97% of SK Hynix's total assets by the end of 2024. This funding covers the costs of equipment introduction, installation, and commissioning, and the entire delivery and deployment cycle will last for approximately two years until December 2027.

This investment is in response to the growing demand for general-purpose DRAM and artificial intelligence (AI) memory, including high bandwidth memory HBM. Considering the steady growth in demand for general-purpose memory in downstream industries such as servers and mobile devices, the company plans to focus on ensuring stable supply.

Specifically, SK Hynix plans to accelerate the transition to the sixth generation (1c) process and expand its AI memory product portfolio by introducing EUV equipment.

The 1c process is a technology developed by SK Hynix globally and is planned to be applied to major product lines such as the next generation HBM, DDR5, and LPDDR6.

Previously, SK Hynix successively developed 1c DDR5 DRAM and LPDDR6 products, ensuring its competitiveness in advanced manufacturing processes. The characteristic of this process is that it can significantly improve production efficiency, energy efficiency, and data processing speed.

It is worth mentioning that while purchasing EUV equipment, SK Hynix is also accelerating capacity expansion and committed to expanding its production base. According to reports, SK Hynix recently opened a second cleanroom at its M15X factory in Cheongju and began installing equipment, two months ahead of the originally planned schedule for May. At this point, both cleanrooms of M15X are ready and will soon be fully operational. In addition, SK Hynix also plans to expand the production scale of the Longin Phase I factory and expects to start clean room operations in February 2027.

A spokesperson for SK Hynix stated, 'We will enhance our competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence memory by transitioning to advanced EUV technology, and steadily expand the supply of general-purpose memory.'. We will consolidate our market leading position to cope with the surge in global memory demand

We have some spot inventory of Hynix memory in our warehouse. If you have any needs, please feel free to contact us at any time.
